320 Chestnut

Program

Renovate a '50s office tower located in the Historic District of downtown Wilmington.

Design Response

The renovations are designed to respect, retain and restore historic features of this Midcentury Modern building while bringing the building systems and office spaces into the 21st century. New HVAC equipment, combined with a tighter and better insulated building envelope, makes the building more comfortable for occupants, and reduces operating expenses. A green roof reduces rainwater runoff and moderates the temperature of rooftop and interior spaces. “It’s a jewel and now it will last another 60 to 75 years.” George Edwards, Executive Director of the Historic Wilmington Foundation “All I can say is that we are standing before… a minor miracle. I can only thank the brilliance and creativity of the Architect, John Sawyer… thank you so much for making this possible.” Rob Zapple, County Commissioner in New Hanover County “Prior to this renovation 320 Chestnut was near the bottom of the list as far as places our employees would like to work.  Now it is ranked as the most desirable work location by county employees and its shared training room stays booked with county, state, and outside organizations.  During construction we encountered several unforeseen issues from lead paint, asbestos, structural discrepancies… throughout all of this John and his team worked with the general contractor and provided sound recommendations and guidance to keep the job moving and on schedule.  Even when we hit them with extra owner demands they were extremely professional and easy to work with.  Most importantly Sawyer Sherwood & Associate Architecture ensured the delivery of a top notch quality finished product on time and on budget.  I would gladly recommend them to anyone who needs an excellent architect that is capable of handling complex projects!” Kevin Caison, Facilities Project Manager for New Hanover County

Religious more...

In addition to the usual skills needed to design secular structures, places of worship require special consideration be given to the traditions and customs of individual congregations. We have built successful relationships with many local congregations, and our experience with faith-based projects makes us familiar with the funding and decision making practices common in this type of construction.
